ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I believe that everything in life is revealed to us as opposites such as joy and sorrow, good and evil, young and old, male and female. The goal of life’s journey is to negotiate powerful—sometimes opposing—forces and to find balance and harmony in our lives, even as we are buffeted by these forces.
In my paintings from the “Passage” series in 1990 to the “Centering” series completed in 1999, I worked to give visual form to my sense of life’s duality. The paintings manifest this duality through opposing formal elements such as an emotionally gestural underpainting countered by rationally controlled fields. Likewise, the contrasting forms of the circle and right angle and the interaction of complementary color schemes and value choice involve the viewer in a search for compositional harmony and balance.
I intend to present the viewer with a harmonious, contemplative image which speaks to the spiritual complexities of our existence.
