Adequate Sleep: Students' Mounting Deficit

Wabash men put their minds and body through physical torture for academics, extra-curricular activities and pledgeships. That torture – as defined by the Geneva Convention – is sleep deprivation.

Opinion: The City of the Plain
Colin Powell, to whom history will certainly be kind, his UN show-and-tell aside, recently wrote a letter saying that the United States is in danger of losing its moral authority in the “war” on “terror.” It took a bill threatening to violate, in spirit if not in letters, the laws of the United States and the Geneva Convention to get such a condemnation. Better late than never, I suppose.    more...

Prifogle Pushing Asian Language Program
There is currently a push at Wabash headed up by certain ambitious faculty members and students to have an Asian language offered as part of the regular course curriculum.  Last year, I decided to join that effort by planning out an interest group in Asian studies that will be starting this year.     more...

Center Of Inquiry Research on the Liberal Arts

“What does "liberal arts" mean, after all?  Is it a set of values, a collection of disciplines, a kind of college, a type of preparation for adult life?  One source of public confusion about the term is the many things it can mean for different people and the rarity of anyone defining the expression in a clear and useful way before using it. We offer with this issue a digest of recent research that defines a
liberal arts education in a new way,  according to an emphasis that can be measured, campus by campus, and an experience that can also be measured, student by student.  Behind this report is extensive research done cooperatively by our staff and Ernest Pascarella and his students at the University of Iowa.”*

Interview with Todd Clark '85

KW: What was your career path after Wabash?

TC: After graduating in 1985 with a degree in Economics and Math I went to work as an actuarial trainee with Golden Role Insurance in Lawrenceville, IL. An actuary deals with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty. I was not particularly satisfied with this job, so I decided to pursue other opportunities. After leaving Golden, I went to work for the Wabash alumni office. After some time there, I decided it would be in my best interests to pursue a graduate degree, so in 1986 I applied and was accepted to the University of Michigan’s Economics Doctoral Program. I spent 6 years in this program, and it was not particularly fun by any stretch of the imagination, with the work week often hitting 60 hours.  Upon earning my Ph.D, I took a job with the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, MO as an economist. The Federal Reserve, as students learn in Econ 101, is tasked with, among other things, maintaining the stability of the US economic and monetary system. I have served as a Senior Economist, Assistant Vice President, and currently am a Vice President and Economist in the Economic Research Department. My experience with the Federal Reserve has been very positive.    more...

What Can You Do With a Liberal Arts Education

One of the first concerns that both parents and students have about a college education is the future; what better opportunities will the student gain, what career will he find success in?  For those parents conscientious of the investment they are making, there is

sure to be concern. Risk is inherent with most investment, so although there is joy in aiding a son through school, there is also the worry of losing time and money. Students, also, are well aware of the pressure of the “real world.” A college like Wabash is our preparation; we will be successful due to our hard-work and determination. But what can we do with a Liberal Arts education in the long run?
