Sister Outsider Poetry Reading: Fine Arts Center Korb Classroom M120, 7:30PM - 8:30PM
WHO WE ARE Dominique Christina and Denice Frohman are Sister Outsider. This duo represents the current top two female slam poets in the world. Their tour, starting Fall 2013, marks the first time two Women of the World Poetry Slam Champions have paired up. Dominique Christina is a writer, performer, educator, and activist. She holds three national titles in the three years she has been competing in slam, including the 2012 Women of the World Slam Champion and 2011 National Poetry Slam Champion. She is presently the only person to have held two national titles at one time. Her work is greatly influenced by her family's legacy in the Civil Rights Movement; her grandfather was a Hall of Famer in the Negro Leagues, while her aunt was one of the Little Rock Nine. She has always known she was a colored girl. Her writing is a celebration of that. Dominique Christina has performed across the country. She opened for Cornel West, and performed for the Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till families in Washington DC at the Shiloh Baptist Church. A former 1996 Olympic Volleyball star, Dominique has over 10 years experience as a licensed teacher, holding double Masters degrees in Education and English Literature. She is the Program Director for Peace Jam and Operations Director for Shaheed Media LLC, booking agency. She will be appearing in the upcoming season of Verses and Flow on TV One, and will be a featured speaker for Ted Talks in the fall. Her first book, Writing In Fire is set for publication in Fall 2013 along with her first full length volume of poetry, Open Mouth Got Teeth. Denice Frohman is an award-winning poet, lyricist, and educator, whose multi-cultural upbringing inspires her to explore the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and the "in-between-ness" that exists in us all. She is the 2013 Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion, and a 2012 Leeway Transformation Award recipient. Her work has been commissioned by Philadelphia’s citywide “UnLitt

Jeremy Bird '00: After the Election: Baxter Hall Lovell Lecture Room, 8:00PM
How does a Wabash religion major get on the Colbert Report? It might have something to do with playing a major leadership role in the Obama Presidential campaign. Join Jeremy Bird as he discusses life after the campaign, including his work for 270 Strategies. From the 270 Strategies website: Jeremy Bird is a founding partner at 270 Strategies and a longtime grassroots organizer with broad experience across domestic and international politics, labor, and policy. He helped launch 270 Strategies after serving most recently as the National Field Director for the 2012 re-election campaign of President Barack Obama, where he had primary responsibility for building a nationwide army of staff and volunteer organizers. Dubbed the campaign’s “Field General” by Rolling Stone magazine, Jeremy was listed among “The Obama Campaign’s Real Heroes” and has been cited as “a former Harvard divinity student who took to political organizing as though it were his higher calling.” He is credited with helping establish a ground game and turnout machine that in 2012 “reproduced – through brute force, dedication and will – a turnout in the swing states that in some cases bested the campaign's remarkable performance of four years ago.”
