The Song Dynasty: Modern in What Sense? Many Chinese historians see the Song dynasty (960-1276) as the equivalent of early modern Europe. This talk analyzes the legacy of Nait? Torajiro, the Japanese historian who first called the Song early modern, and the aspects of Song society that qualify for modernity: recruitment for government office by civil service examinations, an interest in the past and the flourishing of archeology, a money economy, and a socially mobile elite. It also explains the problematic implications of Nait?’s theory. Dr. Valerie Hansen teaches Chinese and world history at Yale, where she is professor of history. Her main research goal is to draw on nontraditional sources to capture the experience of ordinary people. In particular she is interested in how sources buried in the ground, whether intentionally or unintentionally, supplement the detailed official record of China’s past.
