To help ensure that your first postgraduate job starts you down a successful and fulfilling career path, Career Services offers you a full range of services and opportunities.
We suggest students begin the actual search process at the beginning of their senior year, at the latest. The hiring process for finance, consulting, accounting and for nationally competitive management training programs starts in September of the senior year. While the process is somewhat more just-in-time for other fields, students who have prepared for success in the early fall are ready to strike when the opportunities come up. Those students choosing to wait until later to begin will invariably miss out on many excellent opportunities.
To conduct an effective search, you’ll need:
- Cover letter
- Writing samples
- Thank you letter
- Portfolio of your work (for creative fields)
- A goal
- Working knowledge and usage of our resources
- A job search plan, including involvement in our networking and job search events
- A Plan B (and C, D….)
Career Services is available to help you at any point in your search, and with any of the requirements listed above. You should also let us know what types of opportunities you’re seeking. The beauty of a small school is that we can give you individual assistance, and refer you to specific opportunities that match your interests. If we know you, we can help you, if we don’t, we can’t.

Individual Job Search Coaching
Our staff is available to help you create and carry out your full job search plan. Stop by anytime to see us, no appointment needed.
Resume/Cover Letter Critiques
Download our Job Search Guide and create a resume draft. The Guide includes section on resumes and cover letters, along with samples. Once you have your draft complete, drop it off at our front desk, email it over, or stop by for a critique. Either way, we’ll get back with you quickly. You never need an appointment to stop by and see us. Note that it often takes several drafts to get your resume perfect, so don’t wait until the last minute to get yours started.
Peer Career Advisors
Our student Peer Career Advisors are trained to help you with resumes and cover letters, application procedures, WabashWorks, and other job search-related issues. All our evening hours are staffed by our Peer Career Advisors. Stop by for assistance day or evening.
Scheduled throughout the academic year, these interviews always require you to apply in advance through Handshake. Employers select whom they would like to interview from the applications, and if selected, your interview will take place in Career Services. Professional dress is always required. Employer Information Sessions
Also scheduled throughout the year, these events allow you to meet with employers in a less formal setting to find out more about the employer and opportunities with the organization. Dress is usually business casual and all events require an advance RSVP through Handshake.
Resume Referrals to Employers
Quite a few employers choose to recruit at Wabash by way of resume referrals in lieu of posting a position listing or conducting an on-campus visit. We sent out targeted emails to students who meet the criteria the employer specifies. You send your resume to us, we then send it to the employer, and the employer will contact you if interested. Important: You will not receive these emails if you do not completely fill out your Profile in Handshake.
We manage a number of online resume books in Handshake grouped by industry area of interest. These books are accessed directly by employers, and they may contact you if they find your resume of interest. You upload your resume into any of the books of interest to you. Make sure your resume profile fits the industry the resume books targets.
Alumni/Student Networking System
Housed in Handshake through the Mentor tab, this alumni/student networking system allows you to connect with Wabash alumni who have indicated that they would like to be of assistance to you. This is a fantastic networking resource and has resulted in a number of successful job connections. We manage groups on LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest and a Twitter page, and invite you to connect with us on those to ensure you don’t miss any opportunities or interesting career-related postings.

Events, Workshops, Speakers
Throughout the academic year, we host alumni/student networking events and trips, mock interview programs, alumni and employer panels, guest speakers, and career fairs, in addition to a number of other job search-related events. Transportation is provided to all off-campus events. For a current schedule, check out the Handshake Calendar. An RSVP is always required to participate.
Suit Yourself Program
Alumni, staff, faculty, and friends have donated suits, dress shirts and pants, ties, and dress shoes, to enable all students to dress properly for networking events, interviews, etc. Students simply check out the clothing of their choice from our Suit Room in Career Services. Clothing may be checked out for one week and may also be utilized for class presentations and formals. There is no charge to utilize this service.
