Surenkamp Sends Wabash to 15th Victory

Sophomore guard Jordan Surenkamp exploded for a career-high 15 points to lead the Wabash basketball team to an 83-55 win at Oberlin Saturday afternoon.
Surenkamp, whose previous scoring best came in a six-point effort against Earlham as a freshman, was perfect from the field. He connected on all six shot attempts, including two 3-point attempts, to lead the Little Giants in scoring. He also grabbed four rebounds, handed out three of Wabash's 19 assists, and made two steals in just 17 minutes of court time.
Wabash took an early 4-2 lead on consecutive baskets by Wes Smith before Oberlin's Pat Bernhard drilled a three for a 5-4 Yeomen lead. Wabash would answer with 13 consecutive points to take a 12 points advantage that would never fall below double digits for the rest of the afternoon.
Surenkamp tallied his first assist with 11:23 left to play in the first period when he found Derek Bailey open for a trey to give Wabash a 22-7 lead. Surenkamp added his first basket two minutes later with a layup to put the Little Giants up by 19. Wabash would take a 50-28 halftime lead before outscoring the Yeomen 33-27 in the final period.
Smith finished with 13 points in 26 minutes of action. Bailey added 10 points, as did senior Ben Burkett. Burkett led Wabash with 11 rebounds to record his first career double-double.The Little Giants shot 50.9 percent, hitting 29-of-57 shots. Wabash was 9-of-17 from 3-point range and 16-of-21 from the free throw line. The Little Giants outrebounded Oberlin 39-24.
Andrew Fox led Oberlin (1-17, 0-9 NCAC) with 14 points. Charlie Crawford-Silva added 13 points.
Wabash moves to 15-2 overall and 7-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play with the victory. The Little Giants travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday night.
