30 Here to Vie for Lilly Scholarship Awards
April 12, 2012
High-achieving high school seniors from across the nation are on campus this weekend for the 37th Lilly Scholarship competition. There will be 30 young men participating in a discussion and interviews hoping they are one of lucky young men to be awarded a full scholarship. The Lilly Scholarship covers tuition, room and board for all four years of a student’s Wabash education. The estimated value, over four years, is $170,000. The scholarship program was established in 1974 to honor Eli Lilly and his family. The award is designed to recognize outstanding young men who show potential. Honorees will be young men who can prove they will impact Wabash College and their community. The program includes a Thursday evening welcome and keynote speech delivered by David Broecker ’83. Broecker is President of Research Models & Services, Harlan Laboratories, Indianapolis. He was a Wabash chemistry major and summa cum laude graduate. He earned his MBA from the University of Chicago. Broecker was a Lilly Scholar from Carmel, IN. while attending Wabash. One of the most important parts of the weekend takes place Friday when students will interview one at a time with a panel of faculty and alumni. The students will also participate in a faculty-led group seminar discussion Saturday morning. But it’s not all work for the 30 visitors. The young men will spend the night in on-campus living units. They’ll be hosted for a cookout Friday night before attending the Mac Miller concert Friday night.
