Henderson: The Economy of Dickens

The Rogge Committee at Wabash College is pleased to invite you to a presentation by Professor Jim Henderson, emeritus professor of economics at Valparaiso University, for a lecture on Tuesday, October 31.

Henderson’s talk, entitled "Charles Dickens and Christmas: Roasting the Dismal Science," will be presented at 11:15 a.m. in Baxter Hall, room 114.The talk uses video clips to explain that "A Christmas Carol" is a thinly veiled attack on Malthusian and Victorian attitudes toward the poor.

Henderson will show how Charles Dickens rejected the view that poor people should be denied aid so that they might simply die off.

Professor Henderson is the past-president of the History of Economics Society and is an expert on English classical economics. The presentation is open to the public. It will be followed by a question and answer period and pizza lunch at 12:30.

The talk is free and open to the public.
