Wabash Tennis Trip Starts With Loss to Sacred Heart

The Wabash tennis began a grueling schedule of matches for its spring break trip to Puerto Rico Monday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to Division I Sacred Heart University.

The Pioneers opened the match by sweeping doubles play for the first team point. Wade Miller and Daniel Delgado lost for the first time this season in doubles, falling 8-3 to Kirill Kasyanov and Chris Ujkic. Ricky Ritter and Peter Gunderman lost 8-3 to Cole Conrad and Michael Syer, while Evan Bayless and Ian Leonard dropped an 8-2 decision to Nick Mazzarese and Jacob Miller.

Sacred Heart won all six singles matches in straight sets.

"I thought we competed well against a very good Division I opponent," Head Coach Jason Hutchison said. "The scores were not really indicative of how close the matches really were.

"This was a good gauge for the rest of the season and shows us what else we need to work on to compete with the top teams in our conference."

The Little Giants will compete against Minnesota State-Mankato on Tuesday before playing the University of Connecticut Wednesday afternoon. Thursday concludes the competition portion of the trip with a match against the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez.
