St. Louis 2012

The 8th rendition of W.A.B.A.S.H. Day in St. Louis returned to a familiar site as the St. Louis Association of Wabash Men partnered with Gateway Greening to refurbish a community garden in Botanical Heights in the city’s near south side.   Gateway Greening is a non-profit organization in St. Louis whose mission is to contribute to neighborhood vitality and stability through community food projects, education and wellness programs, and civic greening.

While our 2010 efforts including the planting of 20+ fruit trees (including the massive holes required for each root ball), this year’s assignment was much easier on the collective backs of the volunteers and consisted of weeding and mulching vegetable gardens and prepping the site for the construction of a neighborhood playground.  Seven (7) alumni from the St. Louis area spanning 42 years of Wabash classes participated in this year’s event, including Charlie Raiser ’69 who has been a steadfast leader and supporter of Wabash events in St. Louis for many years and Jeremy Coons, ’12 who arrived a few days ago for his job with Edward Jones.   In the picture provided, the alumni participating were (from L to R): Dr. John Williams ’85, Charlie Raiser ’69, Patrick Drake ’06, Jeremy Coons ’12, Jim Dyer ’83, and David Weglarz ’03.  Susan Dyer (Depauw ’83) also join us for the 3rd consecutive year.
