NCAC Men's Heptathlon Results
The Wabash track and field team turned in another record-setting Saturday on the way to a first-place finish at the Anderson Fred Wilt Memorial Invite. Two members of the team, Matt Dickerson and Adam Wadington, competed in the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Heptathlon with each finishing in the top-five overall.
Dickerson finished second in all four of the first-day events, scoring a total of 2,591 points to trail Ohio Wesleyan's Andre Diehl (2,639 points) with three events remaining on Sunday's schedule. Adam Wadington sits in fifth place with 2,304 points heading into the last day of competition.
Dickerson scored 769 points with a time of 7.33 in the 60-meter dash. Wadington scored 719 points by finishing in 7.472 seconds. Dickerson added another 619 points to his total with a leap of 6.15 meters (20 feet, 2.25 inches) in the long jump, while Wadington posted a mark of 5.61 meters (18 feet, 5 inches) for 504 points. Dickerson's mark of 11.63 meters (38 feet, 2 inches) in the shot put earned him 584 points. Wadington scored 462 points with a mark of 9.61 meters in the shot.
Wadington and Dickerson each picked up 619 points in the high jump by clearing 1.79 meters (5 feet, 10.5 inches). The two athletes will compete in the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault, and the 1,000-meter run at the College of Wooster on Sunday.
The Little Giants turned in two school records along with quickest time reported in the nation this season in a third event.
Charles Smothers crossed the finish line in 7.06 in the finals of the 60-meter dash to break the mark of 7.07 set last season by
Sean Hildebrand. Smothers finished third in the field of eight finalists.The Wabash 4x200-meter relay team of
Joel Whittington,
Chet Riddle,
Joey Conti, and Hildebrand toured the oval in 1:30.69, eclipsing the old school record of 1:30.98 set in 2010.
The 800-meter run proved to be the highlight race of the meet.
Jake Waterman, the two-time indoor national runner-up and 2012 outdoor national champion in the event, produced the best time of the season by any Division III athlete by winning the race with a time of 1:50.97, one-tenth of a second off his own school record. Dan Sullivan from Wisconsin-Stevens Point held the previous top mark this year at 1:52.29.
Cole Hruskovich also blistered the track to finish second with a finishing time of 1:53.79, the 12th-quickest reported this season.
James Kervan took fourth place (1:57.52), with
Sean Lewis finishing fifth (1:57.69) and
Fabian House finishing sixth (1:58.93).
Nick Boyce won the mile run by finishing in 4:19.17.
Joel Beier won the shot put with a mark of 15.16 meters (49 feet, 9 inches), while Derek De St. Jean took second place (14.79 meters; 48 feet, 6.25 inches). De St. Jean added an individual victory in the weight throw with a mark of 15.65 meters (51 feet, 4.25 inches).
Chris Stanzinski scored a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 23.29, just ahead of Conti in third place (23.37). Whittington took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.48, while Stanzinski's time of 52.17 was good for fifth place. Wabash flooded the field of 3,000-meter runners, grabbing six of the seven places.
Adam Togami finished second with a time of 8:54.95, followed by Matt Avanatti (8:59.69),
Billy McManus (8:59.95),
Shane Hoerbert (9:07.31),
Ryan Horner (9:19.40), and
Jared Santana (9:53.84) finishing third through seventh.
Dalton Boyer took third place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:36.38.
Jared Burris was just under aa second behind in fourth place (15:37.32).
Ronnie Posthauer finished third in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.30, while
Billy Rosson was fourth (8.80).
Arion Clanton posted a mark of 12.61 meters (41 feet, 4.5 inches) in the triple jump to take third place.
Vann Hunt was fifth overall (11.89 meters; 39 feet, 0.25 inches).
Quinn Biddle was sixth in the event with a mark of 11.80 meters (38 feet, 8.75 inches).
Matt Knox added a third-place finish in the pole vault by clearing a height of 4.75 meters (15 feet, 7 inches) to equal his career-best mark. Smothers also scored a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.13 meters (20 feet, 1.5 inches).
Kris Nickle and
Grayden Gilmore were among a pack of athletes that all cleared 1.88 meters (6 feet, 2 inches) in the high jump. Nickle and Gilmore were awarded a tie for sixth place based upon the number of attempts needed to clear the final height.
Wabash nearly doubled the score of second-place Huntington in the team scoring, finishing with 141.16 points compared to 74 for the Foresters. Franklin took third place (47), followed by Marian (43.5). Anderson and Manchester (34 points) tied for fifth place.
