MXIBS Presents Ms. Ilyasah Shabazz — April 3, 2008

The Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies hosted Ms. Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of slain civil rights activist Malcolm X, during the kickoff of the Africa Network.

Amina McIntyre, assistant director of the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies, gave the audience an overview of the accomplishments of the MXIBS over the last two years.

Ms. Shabazz gave students, faculty, staff, and guests a personal take on what her father stood for in life and his legacy today.

Senior member of the MXIBS Earl Rooks had the great pleasure of introducing Ilyasah Shabazz.

Ms. Shabazz called for the students to learn their history and use education as a tool for change.

The visit of Ilyasah Shabazz was made possible by the MXIBS, as well as CMG Worldwide, the Hadley Fund, Lecture Implementation Committee, McGregor Fund, the Media Center, Multicultural Concerns Committee, the Muslim Students Association, the Visiting Artists Series, and Wal-Mart Optical.

Alumnus Keith Nelson was on hand for the festivities. Ms. Shabazz praised the work of Nelson and his classmates, who founded the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies at Wabash more than 35 years ago.

Ms. Shabazz wove history, culture, education, and even humor into her remarks. In this shot she laughs after asking how many members of the MXIBS wanted to graduate and then go out and "pimp their rides." She said, it's not like "our ancestors wanted to go pimp their chariots!"

Tim Lake, assistant professor of English and director of the MXIBS, gave closing remarks and placed in historical context what Ms. Shabazz' visit meant to Wabash, which established the first Malcolm X Institute in the country.
