During some of our stops we have to fight the crowds, but with Cook's inside knowledge there are many stops where we have the place to ourselves.

The students listen carefully as Prof. Cook talks about the Ospedale degli Innocenti - or orphanage. The building was designed by the same architect as the famous domed cathedral - Brunelleschi. The building continues to coordinate child services to this day.

The Ospedale degli Innocenti. Note the small children portrayed in the small blue terra cotta reliefs. Cook explained the orphanage was started in part so the city's rich and famous had a place to take illegitimate children often fathered during relationships with servants.

In the orphanage's museum we looked at hymnals from medevial times.

When Bill Cook starts talking - people listen. During one of day's stops at the Ospedale degli Innocenti a group of nuns listened in for awhile.

This and the next photo both show some of the advantages of immersion learning. The students not only get to see what they've read and learned about during regular class but they get to see it up close and personal.
