Work has begun on the construction of outdoor athletics facilities at Wabash College. In the first phase, workers are tearing the turf off the field at Byron P. Hollett Little Giant Stadium so that the underlayment for Field Turf can be installed. The football field and new scoreboard will be in place for the 2010 season. Work will soon begin on the new baseball stadium and in preparing Mud Hollow to become the home of a new soccer stadium and intramural complex. The baseball and soccer facilities will be ready for competition for the 2011 seasons.

Former football players had mixed emotions when they saw the massive machinery taking up the sod at Hollett Little Giant Stadium. "There are a lot of wins in that dirt," some said.

On day one of construction, workers got about one-fourth of the turf torn up and piled in the middle of the field.

Wabash won't need to water the football stadium again thanks to the installation of Field Turf, which is the same surface the Indianapolis Colts play on at Lucas Oil Stadium. These irrigation pipes will be removed with the sod.

In spite of temperatures near 90 and high humidity, workers got a lot done on the first day of the project.
