The Notebook of Trigorin presents a new look at Chekhov's The Sea Gull. Williams' talent for delving into the psyche of a character is greatly exemplified as he takes these famous Chekhov characters and reworks them to suit his own ideals and purpose. Written late in Williams' career, the play was a project that he had wanted to undertake for decades. He had always had emotional connections to Trigorin, and especially Constantine. Williams expressed this desire to those around him at the University of British Columbia, where he had a residency in 1980. The play was slated for performance in October 1981 before Tennessee Williams had written the first word.
