In a 1998 interview with theater professor Mike Abbott '85, Will Hays, Jr. recalled:

"My father loved the West, and after he took me to a ranch when I was a boy, I fell in love with it all--the mountains, the work of the cowboys, the smell of the sagebrush. We spent some of our best time together there."
