Dr. Keith Bradley, Professor Emeritus of Classics at the University of Notre Dame, will present the John F. Charles lecture at Wabash College. Bradley will present a talk titled: “Revolt and Rebellion: Resisting Slavery at Rome.”
Bradley will speak at 8 p.m., Monday, October 20, in room 101 (Lovell Lecture Room) of Baxter Hall. A reception will follow his talk.
Bradley is the Eli J. and Helen Shaheen Professor Emeritus of Classics at the University of Notre Dame. He studies ancient history and has published extensively on the social and cultural history of Rome. He has particular interests in the history of slavery, the history of the family, and the history of religion in classical antiquity. Most recently, he has combined and extended these interests in a long-term study of the Romano-African author Apuleius, who was tried on the charge of practicing magic (a capital offence under Roman law) in the middle of the second century AD.
The John F. Charles Memorial Lecture was established by one of Professor Charles' former students, Bruce Baker ’65. Baker funded the lecture out of his admiration for and love of his world history teacher. Professor Charles taught from 1940 through 1980 and was esteemed as a scholar and teacher, on campus and among his academic peers.
