Kevin McCarthy finished sixth at Saturday's NCAA Division III National Championship Men's Cross Country Race with a school-record time of 24:15. He and his Wabash College teammates finished 16th overall.
McCarthy's time eclipsed the old school record of 24:29 set by his current college coach, Roger Busch, at the 1995 NCAA Championship meet. Busch finished sixth in that meet, as well. McCarthy tied Busch for the second-highest finish by a Wabash runner at nationals. Kent Baker's fifth-place finish at the 1992 nationals remains the best by a Little Giant runner.
Brian David was the second Red Pack runner to cross the finish line, turning in a time of 25:00.76 to eclipse his previous season-best time by 11 seconds. David finished in 61st place. Dalton Boyer was 87th in the 279-man field, finishing with a time of 25:11.82. His previous season-best time was 25:33.57.
Freshman Jared Burris finished in 25:57.30 to take 196th place with his first sub-26 minute time of the year. Kenny Farris was two seconds off his top time of the season, crossing the finish line in 25:59.56 to take 203rd place. Billy McManus was 235th with a time of 26:09.93 — his best time this year. Nick Boyce was the final Wabash runner to compete on Saturday, posting a time of 26:50.26 to finish 269th. Boyce's time was also his best of the year.
Wabash scored a total of 419 points to finish in the top-20 for the second consecutive season. The Little Giants were 13th at last year's race. North Central won the team competition for the second time in three years and 14th in history of the program. The Cardinals scored a total of 110 points.
