Kevin McCarthy competed in the first heat of the men's 800-meter run. The Wabash junior finished fourth in his heat and ninth overall, just missing the final spot in Saturday's finals.

 McCarthy got trapped inside and was unable to find space to break free during the first heat.

Seconds after the race conclude, the look on McCarthy's face told the whole story — he would not be returning to the finals for the second consecutive year.

Less than a half-second separated first place from fourth place at the finish of the second heat. Waterman finished third overall with his time of 1:53.04.

The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships began with a celebration banquet held in the Capital University gymnasium on Thursday evening. Wabash was represented by Assistant Coach Roger Busch, sophomore Jake Waterman, junior Kevin McCarthy, and Head Coach Clyde Morgan.

 Morgan was named the Great Lakes Region Men's Coach of the Year by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association at Thursday night's banquet. Waterman received the Great Lakes Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year. Both received those awards for the second year in row.

Former Wabash runner Geoff Lambert is now an assistant coach at Manchester College. Lambert spent some time with Wabash Head Coach Clyde Morgan and Assistant Roger Busch during the meet. Lambert held the Capital Fieldhouse record in the 800-meter run, but his mark was bettered in Friday night's second heat.
