CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)

Contact: Jane Christophersen

Phone: 765.362.0694 ext. 13

Location: Youth Service Bureau Building, 209 E. Pike St., Crawfordsville

Services: CASAs (sometimes known as guardian ad litems) are assigned to CHINS (Child in Need of Services), typically by judges, although attorneys or parents may also request a CASA. (Mrs. Christophersen determines which CASA receives each case, subject to judge approval.) CHINS are those who may have encountered abuse or neglect, have parent(s) in jail, or whose parents are divorcing. CASAs provide a voice for the child in court, since attorneys typically represent adults. CASAs work with adults, children, relatives, foster parents, etc. to garner information to allow them to speak on the child's behalf. The hope is for a satisfactory resolution, and one, which is in the best interest of the child.

Opportunities: To be a CASA, an individual must be at least 21 years old and available year-round. Minimum of 30min of training are required, with training typically done once per year, in groups. Other opportunities: - Fundraising - Research grant opportunities
