Wabash College seeks candidates for its open position of Associate Director in the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion.

Position Description

The Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion funded by Lilly Endowment Inc., was established at Wabash College to enhance teaching of religious and theological studies in higher education. The Wabash Center embodies its mission for the support of faculty through such activities as: creating and curating educational resources, a regranting program, and convening of cohort groups. The Associate Director is part of a staff that thinks creatively to organize, support, implement, and assess Wabash Center activities.  Specifically, the work of the Associate Director includes assisting with overall administration of the programmatic life of the Wabash Center through critical knowledge of educational design, project management, multimodal resource development, imagination and collaborative skills.

Some remote work is possible, as approved by the Director of the Wabash Center, but the successful candidate will be expected regularly on campus as well as for all Wabash Center functions.

Key responsibilities

• Participate as a team member to enhance, enrich and facilitate the mission of the Wabash Center
• Assist with design, implementation, evaluation, and long-range planning of the overall programs of the Wabash Center
• Coordinate cohort groups and other programming which can take place on-campus, remote and online
• Facilitate a programmatic portfolio of assorted responsibilities, e.g., assist cohort groups with participant leaders, manage and curate an assortment of educational resources, assist with re-granting program, plan annual programming calendar, manage consultants’ program
• Cultivate and maintain relationships and partnerships with higher education groups and guilds (e.g. SBL, AAR, ATS, FTE, REA, etc.)
• Represent the Wabash Center at professional society meetings, conferences, and in media events, as designated by the Director
• Keep abreast of new developments with the scholarship of teaching and learning with particular emphasis upon religion and theology
• Network with individuals and groups who are current participants and potential participants of the Wabash Center
• Participate in the faculty life of Wabash College, as time and interest warrants
• Other duties as assigned by the Director

 Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

• Doctorate degree or equivalent in fields related to religious education, religion and theology

• Minimum of 3 years of teaching in the fields of theological or religious studies
• Proven project management and administrative skills
• Previous experience managing educational programming and curating resources
• Highly values working collaboratively with a supervisor and team members in an ethos of creativity, respect, and collegiality
• Keen ability for collaborative creativity and imagination with a diversity of constituencies from across the U.S. and Canada who teach in a variety of fields and institutional contexts
• Knowledgeable about a variety of approaches and methods in adult pedagogy; expertise in remote and online pedagogies preferred
• Knowledge of digital mediums in education
• Knowledgeable of issues of race, class, gender diversities and articulate about the politics of diversity and identity
• Knowledge of issues of racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, islamophobia, etc., and articulate about systemic and structural oppressions
• Knowledgeable about the wide range of cultural epistemologies and associated pedagogies
• Pro-active about and experienced working with issues of cultural competence, inclusion, and anti-racism
• Willingness to travel to workshop and conference locations that include overnight stays
• Gains satisfaction from interacting and working with teachers, confronting challenging problems in higher education, and learning new skills for better teaching and administration.
• Able to work efficiently in a hybrid office environment; willing to be on campus for regular functions

The Wabash Center is located on the campus of Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Wabash College is a private liberal arts college for men located in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Founded in 1832, its mission is to “educate men to think critically, act responsibly, lead effectively, and live humanely,” and it accomplishes its mission in a residential community in which faculty are highly engaged with their students, in and out of the classroom.

Crawfordsville, Indiana, population 16,000, is the county seat of Montgomery County, home to three school corporations and six museums. Third-term Mayor Todd Barton is a Wabash College graduate who successfully secured “Stellar Communities” designation from the State of Indiana, which resulted in a series of transformational projects including “Fusion 54,” a downtown park, and a downtown cultural trail linking Wabash to the town. Wabash College was recently awarded a $25 million grant from Indiana’s Lilly Endowment Inc., which will help to fund a new campus and community engagement center, a Latino Community Center, and a Montgomery County Early Learning Center.

Crawfordsville is served by AMTRAK, with service to Indianapolis and Chicago. The top-rated Indianapolis International Airport is an hour drive from campus and Chicago’s Loop is approximately a three-hour drive.

Employment opportunities for spouses and partners abound in the area. While the vast majority of Wabash faculty and staff live in Montgomery County, thriving suburban communities northwest of Indianapolis include Zionsville and Brownsburg, which are each about a 40-minute drive to campus. West Lafayette, home to Purdue University, is just 30 minutes to the north.
