Inaugural Legacy Outing a Big Success

Little Giant Legacy Golf Outing – June 19, 2014.  The Little Giant Legacy Golf Outing is a new event this year. The event, organized by the Department of Athletics, is an opportunity for alumni interested in Wabash athletics to get together, play a round of golf, and financially support a project for the Athletics Department. The Heartland Crossing Golf Links, on the southwest side of Indianapolis, was the site for the 2014 edition of the outing.

This year’s project is a photo display of Little Giant athletic teams to be installed in the Allen Center. According to Director of Athletics and Campus Wellness Joe Haklin ’73, “The new project will display all of the team photos that have been collected over the years. This project will tell the timeless story of the successes, bonds, and challenges of athletic teams at Wabash.”

Over 90 golfers gathered at Heartland Crossing for the event. The first group off the tee included Rem "The Big Cookie" Johnston '55, Trustee Tom Hays '55, Golf Coach Mac Petty H'82, and former Little Giant basketball player Merlin Nice '84.

The team of Tom Jones, Kirk Booe, Doug Alison, and Leonard Orr won the tournament. Tom works at Indiana Business Machines, a business partner of the College.  Kirk, Doug, and Leonard were his guests.

The title sponsor for the event is GO Express Travel, the company that provides a majority of the transportation for Wabash’s athletic teams. Sodexho and Bon Appetit were also event partners. Special event sponsors included Triton Brewing and Sun King Brewing companies – Indiana specialist breweries with a strong Wabash connection.

Many thanks go out to the Legacy Outing Committee — Haklin, Steve Hoffman ’85, Mike Warren ’93, lacrosse coach Terry Corcoran, and Sue Schneider — and all the organizations and individuals supporting the outing.
