For the second year in a row, The Bachelor defeated its rival newspaper The DePauw at this year’s Indiana Collegiate Press Association awards conference. The distinction for The Bachelor was bolstered by four 1st place awards and 19 overall awards and a second-place finish for Best Newspaper.

The awards encompassed the spring and fall semesters of 2014 under Editors-in-chief Scott Morrison ’14 and Patrick Bryant ’16.
Of the 19 overall awards the staff received, a number of different staff members from the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years were recognized. Receiving 1st place awards were former Photo Editor Ian Baumgardner ’14, Photo Editor Corey Egler ’15, and photographer Levi Garrison ‘18. Receiving 2nd or 3rd place awards were Bryant, writer Tyler Regnier ’16, Senior Sports Writer Jocelyn Hopkinson ’15, columnist Grant Klembara ’15, Egler, Cavelife Editor Fritz Coutchie ’15, and photographer Kendall Baker ‘16.
Some of the pieces to receive high praise from the judges include Egler’s photo “Sammy Adams performs,” a photo from last spring’s National Act performance.
“Perfectly framed,” the judge said of the photo. “Concert shots are hard to get just right. Photographer Corey Egler managed it perfectly.”
The Bachelor received 5 more awards than it did last year.
"It has truly been an honor to work with the group of guys that we've had on staff this year,” said Bachelor Editor Patrick Bryant ’16. “I was fortunate to have a very strong, dedicated editorial team but also a great staff of both veteran and promising young staffers.
“We as a staff are very fortunate and I'm lucky personally to have such a great advocate, advisor, and friend in Howard Hewitt. The feedback, advice, and genuine interest he has in not just The Bachelor?, but all of us. Awards are a nice part of the job, but working with a group like this every week is a reward that I have really cherished in my time as editor."
Although The Bachelor failed to repeat its “Newspaper of the Year” title from last year, it faced tough competition from Taylor University. Despite not placing last year in Division III, the school put up 49 points in pursuit of the top honor. The Bachelor received 34 points and DePauw received 30.
“I’m no longer surprised to watch our student journalists do so well at ICPA,” Advisor Hewitt said. “When we first started beating DePauw, with an endowed journalism program and journalism classes, it was somewhat surprising. But the leadership of outstanding students like Patrick and Tyler Hardcastle ’15 this school year has put the Bachelor in a strong position to be in the mix for top awards for years to come.”
