Global Health Initiative Leads Medical Mission

Wabash Global Health Initiative: To transform the lives of our students through global public health education, investigation and service and in so doing to effect positive change in underserved communities globally.

The Wabash College Global Health Initiative is asking Wabash alumni and friends of the College to consider participating in the First Wabash GHI Medical Mission Trip to Peru, October 10-18, 2015. We are partnering with our GHI-Peru Team and Buckner International (a global Christian social service agency) to work on health campaigns in poor communities of Lima, the capital city of Peru.

Ideally at least 15 health professionals will be part of this experience – these can be medical doctors (general practice or others, depending on the specialty), dentists, nurses, physician assistants, etc. As part of the ongoing work of the GHI in Peru, we will provide health services to vulnerable and at risk families there. We also plan to include some clinic and laboratory visits as well as interaction with our GHI-Peru and institutional partners in Peru. We’ll also have an afternoon of sight-seeing so that you get a taste of Peruvian culture, as well.

In addition, our plan is to open this opportunity up to a group of students who have indicated interest in global / public health. One goal of the GHI is to connect current students with alumni-mentors who are professionals in the area of global public health (broadly-defined), so the opportunity to work side-by-side to learn and to serve –to live humanely together—is one that should be exciting in both directions.

Buckner International will arrange all of our travel. The current land cost of this trip is $1,600 and is all-inclusive (meals, lodging [based on double-occupancy], in-country transportation, insurance, interpreters, bottled water, sightseeing, etc.). Airfare (cost separate) is estimated to be $1,000 -- $1,300.

A commitment and trip application will be due in approximately one month, along with a non-refundable deposit. Half- and full-costs will be due in August and September, respectively. Details and more complete information will be sent out after application materials are received, but please feel free to contact Prof. Eric Wetzel (wetzele@wabash.edu) in the Dept. of Biology with questions before that time. You may also view the trip flyer for more information.

The Wabash Global Health Initiative is at an exciting point in its growth, so we are excited to invite alumni and others into this opportunity.
