James Hunter to Deliver Keynote for Inquiry on the Role of Religion in the Liberal Arts

James Hunter
The public is invited to hear James Hunter present "On the Moral Purposes of Higher Education" at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 20 in the Lovell Lecture Room in Baxter Hall.

An open reception will follow the lecture in Rogge Lounge.

Hunter is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Sociology and Religious Studies and Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia.

Hunter will deliver the keynote address for the third in a series of colloquies co-sponsored by the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts at Wabash College and The Phi Beta Kappa Society this semester. The four colloquies address topics of interest to those in the field of liberal arts education. On March 20-23, participants will examine the relationship between liberal arts and religion.

Hunter contributed the following abstract for his upcoming presentation:

"The historical purposes of higher education in America have always been integrally linked to the moral purposes of soul-craft, not only the shaping of virtuous individuals who are ethical in the personal, professional and civic affairs, but in the context of some communities, who are also fit for the Kingdom of God. Needless to say, the challenges to any moral purposes in higher education are formidable in our time. I will elucidate these challenges and the possibilities for working through them."

The lecture is free and open to the public.
