Washington Post Writer Likes Wabash

Washington Post writer Jay Matthews has thrown another resource into the ever-growing number of college guidebooks and rankings.

Matthews promotes his new book, Harvard Schmarvard: Looking Beyond the Ivy League for the College That Is Right for You, in the April 1 edition of The Post.

Matthews polled hundreds of high school guidance counselors and independent college counselors for advice on what he calls the "hidden gems, the lesser known jewels" of higher education."

He ranks Wabash in the 45th spot in his list of the top-100. Of Wabash he writes, "one of the last bastions of single sex education for men, Wabash extols its Gentleman's Rule, a promise to behave as a gentleman and responsible citizen on and off campus...the academic demands require energy and attention."

Matthews credits former New York Times higher education editor Loren Pope for much of the ground-breaking research on exceptional colleges outside the Ivy League. Pope is the author of Colleges That Change Lives, and in that book devotes an entire chapter to Wabash College.
