Wabash Will Hold Its 165th Commencement/Reunion Weekend May 16-18

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND. — Wabash College will hold its 165th Commencement on Sunday, May 18. Baccalaureate will begin at 11 a.m. in the Chapel and Commencement, which includes the awarding of three honorary degrees, will take place at 2:30 p.m. on the College mall.

Receiving honorary degrees are James A. Henderson [Doctor of Laws], retired chairman of Cummins Engine; B. Joseph White [Doctor of Humane Letters], managing director of Fred Alger Management in New York and recently retired from his position as acting president of the University of Michigan; and Ralph G. Yount [Doctor of Science], professor of biochemistry and a research scientist at Washington State University.

Raymond Williams, Lafollette Professor of Religion emeritus, will deliver the Baccalaureate sermon. The title of his sermon is “The World Turned While You Were Here—Therefore...”

Commencement speakers are two of the 211-member graduating class, Todd E. Bertrand and Johnny C. Warren, Jr. Bertrand, a chemistry major, is the son of James and Arlene Bertrand, 7420 Pete Andres Road, Floyds Knobs. The title of his speech is “May 19, 2003: Ready for Tomorrow.” Warren, a political science major, is the son of Linda Newson, 1680 Reed Road #K, Fort Wayne. The title of his speech is “A Pledge Renewed.”

The weekend is also the occasion of the College’s annual alumni reunions. Festivities begin with registration at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 16 in the Fine Arts Center on the Wabash campus. Reunion classes of 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, and 1978 will be the guests of honor at receptions and dinners planned for 5:30 p.m. Friday. The agenda for Saturday, May 17 includes:

12:00 p.m. — Awards Luncheon for all alumni and their families, trustees, faculty, and administrative personnel in the Allen Center. The program will include the presentation of the Senior Award of Merit, the Pete Vaughan Award, and the McLain-McTurnan-Arnold Excellence in Teaching and Research awards. A portrait of long-time trustee Daniel F. Evans ’43 will also be unveiled at the luncheon.

4 p.m. — President’s Reception for all alumni and graduating seniors and their families hosted by President and Mrs. Andrew T. Ford in the Elston Homestead.

In addition the College will have Colloquiums held on both days. On Friday, May 16 at 10:30 a.m. a session will be held on “The Koran on War and Peace” by Emeritus Professor I. Hall Peebles. Then at 1:30 p.m. professors Rick Warner and Dan Rogers will present “From Wabash to Chiapas and Back.” At 3:15 p.m. a presention by Dean of Students Tom Bambrey will present “Wabash Students Today.” On Saturday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m. head football coach Chris Creighton will present, “Football 2002: What a Seasion!” All Colloquiums will take place in Baxter Hall.

Throughout the weekend there will be a variety of cultural events on campus.

The Wabash Theater Department will present The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare, directed by Jemma Levy, visiting assistant professor of theater at Wabash. Performances are schedule for Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Ball Theater in the Fine Arts Center. Tickets are free but you must obtain a ticket by calling 765-361-6411.

The Wabash Art Department will feature the “Wabash Senior Art Majors’ Exhibition” in the Eric Dean Gallery in the Fine Arts Center. Featured will be John Russell, Jim Wyatt, Nathan Clark, Ron Kelsey, and Keng-shen Tsui. . Gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

The Wabash Bookstore will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
