Turnovers Key As Wabash Falls In Bell Classic

Six Wabash turnovers were the difference in a 27-17 loss to DePauw in the 107th Monon Bell Classic on Saturday.

The Little Giants lost five fumbles and one interception in the loss. Wabash outgained DePauw 330 yards to 311, but could not make up the difference on the scoreboard.

Wabash took a 3-0 lead in the second quarter on a 24-yard field goal from Olmy Olmstead (Alexandria, OH/Granville) that followed an interception by senior Joe Trebley (Glenwood, IN/Rushville). The Tigers tied the game with a field goal just before halftime.

DePauw took a 9-3 lead after scoring with 10:56 remaining in the third period and missing the extra point, opening the door of opportunity for Wabash. The Little Giants responded with a Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) three-yard run to take a 10-9 lead.

Wabash added a second touchdown with 9:55 remaining in the game, this time on an 11-yard pass from Knott to Ryan Short (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) to put the Little Giants in front 17-9. The TD was the 13th of the season for Short, setting a Wabash single-season record for touchdown receptions.

DePauw answered with three touchdowns in five minutes in the final period to claim the Bell for the fifth consecutive year.

Knott finished 21-of-40 passing for 213 yards and one TD. He finished the year with 2,739 passing yards to set the Wabash single-season mark and had 2,835 yards of total offense, breaking his record of 2,790 set last season.

The Little Giants finish 6-4 for the season.
