Romeo and Juliet is perhaps the greatest—and certainly the most famous—love story of all time. Supported by the National Endowment for the Arts “Shakespeare in American Communities” initiative, Chicago Shakespeare Theater—one of the premiere theater institutions in America—presents a fully-mounted production of this classic, enriched by student workshops and audience discussions. Award-winning director Gary Griffin brings Romeo and Juliet to the Wabash stage with a theater company the London Independent calls “one of the best Shakespeare companies on a continent dotted with them.”

October 22, 2003 Verklärte Quartet: Fischoff Chamber Music Contest Winners in Concert Salter Hall, Fine Arts Center 8 p.m.

Joseph E. Fischoff and the South Bend Chamber Music Society founded the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 1973 as a way of encouraging young people to pursue chamber music study and performance. Now, 30 years later, the competition has grown to 62 participating ensembles in both wind and string categories from all over the world. Each year, the Grand Prize winning ensemble tours the country. Wabash is proud to welcome the 2003 Fischoff Competition winners, the Verklärte Quartet from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

December 3, 2003 Eroica Trio Salter Hall, Fine Arts Center 8 p.m.

“Passionate,”“edgy,” “sexy,” and “in your face” aren’t words usually associated with chamber music. But never before has there been an ensemble quite like the Grammy-nominated Eroica Trio—three beautiful women with a dramatic flair for Baroque music. Pianist Erika Nickrenz, violinist Adela Pena, and cellist Sara Sant’Ambrogio combine for a sound that has been described as “technically brilliant,” “playful,” “emotional,” and “powerful.” Since its founding at the Juilliard School in 1986, Eroica Trio has performed for sold out crowds around the world and has received rave reviews for its numerous performances at Carnegie Hall. This show is likely to sell out quickly, so plan to get your tickets now for this one-of-kind musical adventure.

January 28, 2004 Phil DeGreg in Concert Salter Hall, Fine Arts Center 8 p.m.

It’s literally impossible to sit still during a concert by jazz pianist Phil DeGreg. The Cincinnati native and Yale graduate has such passion when he performs that audiences quickly become as inspired as the performer. For the last 12 years, DeGreg has been the house pianist at Cincy’s famed Blue Wisp Jazz Club, and has performed with a literal who’s who in the jazz world. He has performed and taught jazz piano around the world, and currently serves as associate professor of jazz studies at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. His recent JCurve Records releases include: “Whirl Away” (2000); “The Green Gate” (1998); “Table for Three” (1996); and “Hand Gliding” (1992). All About Jazz says, “A talent deserving wider recognition, Phil DeGreg carries the mainstream jazz torch effectively and with sparks flying.”

February 27, 2004 Paul O’Dette in Concert Salter Hall, Fine Arts Center 8 p.m.

There is perhaps no lute performer in the world who better knows his instrument and its history than the award winning musician, Paul O’Dette. An avid researcher, writer, director, and performer, O’Dette has been called “the clearest case of genius ever to touch his instrument,” and has made more than 100 recordings, many of which have been nominated for Gramophone’s “Record of the Year” award. Mr. O’Dette has performed at virtually every major international early music festival, and has been featured on the BBC, CBC, NPR, and CBS television, to name only a few. His performance at Wabash will provide a unique opportunity to hear the lute performed as it was meant to be by a virtuoso scholar of early music.

March 25, 2004 Lila Downs in Concert Salter Hall, Fine Arts Center 8 p.m.

Singer Lila Downs is an inspiring performer whose life and music has been shaped by her ongoing search for identity. The child of a Mixtec Indian mother and an Anglo father from Minnesota, Downs spent her childhood moving back and forth from Mexico’s culturally rich Oaxaca Valley to Minneapolis and to Southern California. Drawing from her rich life experiences, Downs often uses her music to explore the plight of people on the margins of our society. Said the San Diego Union-Tribune, “Whether she’s belting a ranchera, cooing a Mixtec lullaby, or crooning a Woody Guthry ballad, she uses her extraordinary voice to celebrate the lives of common people.”
