Wamidan Begins Fourth Year with a Bang

Beginning its fourth year, Wamidan—the World Music Ensemble at Wabash College—was invited to participate in this year’s annual Cincinnati Celtic Music and Cultural Festival.

The festival began twelve years ago has been gradually and steadily expanding its repertoire presentations. In addition to the Scots and Irish that were among the first feature groups, the festival has continued to expand to other cultural traditions including the Welsh, Breton, Galician, and those from other continents. This year the Wamidan World Music Ensemble will steal the spotlight when it features a repertoire of instrumental music dance from both parts of the Asian and African continents as well.

Wamidan is under the direction of Professor James Makubuya of the Music Department, who works with an incredible number of Wabash College staff and student talents as well as from the local Crawfordsville community. The Wamidan ensemble will hit the national spot when they present performances on two different stages including the Doyle Dance Stage and Star Harp Stage on Saturday, September 27 at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.

“Both the organizers and the Wabash performers represented by Wamidan are very excited about the presentations that will no doubt expand the horizon of this already famous national festival,” said Makubuya. “Our contribution of cultural aspects of African and Bangladesh music and dance combined with the Scottish, Welsh, Breton, Galician, and cross-Celtic experience will be a treat for the over 20,000 guests that will attend to enjoy this September weekend festival."
