A Championship Effort

If fans were looking for championship winning performances, look no further than what Wabash College accomplished Saturday as a primary example.

In the span of a few hours, the Little Giants won an NCAA Regional and two North Coast Athletic Conference championships, while three other sports picked up victories as well.

Wabash outdistanced the field at the 2022 NCAA Division III Central Region Wrestling Tournament, capturing the team title with 168.5 points and will send a school-record seven wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, March 11-12, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Wabash wrestling team.Max Bishop and Jack Heldt each claimed individual titles for the Little Giants to move onto nationals, while Carlos Champagne, Daniel Uribe, Alex Barr, Kyle Hatch, and Chase Baczek all claimed top-three finishes.

Wabash head coach Brian Anderson was voted the region's Coach of the Year after leading the Little Giants to the NCAA Central Regional Championship.

The Wabash track and field team won its eighth North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday. The Little Giants won six events and grabbed 13 all-conference accolades in winning the event by 63.5 points.

Max Bigler and Jose Franco earned NCAC Men's Field Athlete and Men’s Sprint/Hurdles Athlete-of-the-Year honors, respectively, while head coach Clyde Morgan, along with assistants Tyler McCreary, John Bute, Emile Conde, Courtny Cotton, and emeritus coach Robert Johnson was named the NCAC Men's Coaching Staff of the Year in leading the program to its 16th NCAC indoor and outdoor conference championship.

Junior forward Ahmoni Jones scored the final six points, all from the free-throw line in the final 21 seconds of The Wabash track and field team.overtime, to help the Wabash basketball team win its first-ever North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship with an 85-84 win over Wooster.

The win was the Little Giants’ 20th consecutive and propels the squad into the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 1998. Wabash improved to 24-3 on the year, including a 16-1 NCAC mark and regular-season championship.

Artie Rogers broke the Wabash single-game record for assists in Saturday's 15-1 lacrosse victory over Concordia University of Chicago. The sophomore from Crown Point, Indiana, handed out a record-setting eight assists in the 15-goal effort, breaking the former record of five assists in a game set five times over the past six seasons.

The Little Giant lacrosse team improved to 3-1 on the year with the win.

Shortstop AJ Reid's RBI triple with one out in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Wabash baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Heidelberg in the 2022 season opener at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. Derek Haslett earned the victory in relief, allowing one hit and striking out four in three innings.

The Wabash basketball team.The Wabash tennis team split a pair of Saturday matches at the Collett Tennis Center. The Little Giants defeated Franklin College 7-2 in the morning match before dropping a 6-3 decision to Greenville University 6-3 in the evening contest.

The mantra inside the Allen Center is “Athletes. Scholars. Champions. Little Giants.” Saturday’s collective effort proved that not only are championships possible at Wabash. Sometimes, they come in bunches.
