Ten Little Giants Selected To All-Conference Team

The North Coast Athletic Conference announced its 2000 All-Conference Football Team on Tuesday. Ten members of the Wabash team were selected as members.

Senior B.J. Hammer (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis), junior Kurt Casper (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) and sophomore Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) were all named First Team All-Conference players. Thomas Brown (Granger, IN/Penn), Ryan Freeman (Delphi, IN/Delphi), Todd Bower (Indianapolis, IN/Speedway), Nathan Boulais (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis), and Ryan Short (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) were Second Team All-Conference selections. Treven Upkes (Springfield, OR/Springfield) and Matt Mercer (Carmel, IN/Carmel) were Honorable Mention All-Conference.

Hammer ended his four-year career at Wabash with every record for tackles for losses and sacks in his possession. His 23 tackles for losses and 15 sacks this season are both Wabash records. The senior co-captain finished his career with 27.5 sacks and 58 tackles for losses, both Littl Giant records as well. He also set the Wabash record for the longest fumble return with a 93-yard run against Allegheny, and scored the first touchdown of his career with a 64-yard fumble return against Manchester. He helped the Wabash defense set a new single-season record for sacks, dropping opposing quarterbacks 48 times this year.

Casper moved into first place on the single-game receiving list with a 250-yard effort against Allegheny. His four TD receptions against the Gators set a Wabash record and tied the NCAC record. He led the NCAC in receptions and receiving yards per game, and was sixth in the nation in receptions per game with an average of 8.2 per contest. Casper finished the year with 82 receptions for 1,005 yards, moving him into seventh on the career receiving list, second on the single-season receptions list, and third on the single-season receiving yards list at Wabash.

Any records not broken by Hammer or Casper were left to sophomore quarterback Knott. He set the Wabash and NCAC single-game record for pass completions with 40 against Allegheny. His 68 attempts against the Gators was also a Wabash single-game record. He threw for 459 yards against Allegheny, breaking his own school record set in 1999. He also set the conference and school single-game record for TD passes with six against Hiram, tying it the next week against Allegheny. He moved from 11th to second on the career passing list with 5,351 yards. He finished this season completing 238-of-430 passes for 2,739 yards, setting the single-season passing yardage record. He finished ninth in the nation in total offense while setting the Wabash and NCAC record for total offense in a season with 2,835 yards.

Brown, a senior co-captain of the Little Giant team and offensive tackle, was consistently graded each week by the Wabash coaches as one of the top blockers on the offensive line. After missing his senior season in high school and the first two years at Wabash on the football field after suffering a broken pelvis in an automobile accident, Brown worked to get himself back on the field to earn a starting spot in his final two seasons at tackle.

Freeman, another of the Wabash co-captains, made 69 tackles and was second on the team in tackles for losses with 11. He also had four sacks and had one fumble recovery. He was also selected to the Verizon/CoSIDA District V Academic All-America First Team.

Boulais led the Little Giants in tackles for the second consecutive season. The sophomore linebacker made 86 stops this season, recorded four tackles for losses, three sacks, and recovered one fumble. He reached double-figures in tackles in five games with a season-high 16 against Allegheny.

Bower saw his season cut short by a broken ankle in the game against Hiram after earning the field goal and extra point kicking duties for the Little Giants. The junior finished the year second in scoring among kickers in the NCAC with 41 points, kicking seven field goals and 20 extra points. He hit a career-best 46-yard field goal against Wittenberg, the longest in the NCAC this season.

Short set a new Wabash single-season record for touchdown receptions, hauling in 13 TD passes over for the year. He finished with 77 receptions for 920 yards and was ranked second in conference in receptions and yards per game behind Casper. He was tied for 10th in the nation in pass receptions per game with an average of 7.7 per game.

Upkes ended his Wabash career as the second-leading tackler for the Little Giants this season. The senior finished with 85 tackles, eight tackles for losses, three sacks, two interceptions, and one fumble recovery.

Mercer, a sophomore, finished the season with 23 tackles, seven tackles for losses, four sacks and one fumble recovery from his spot on the defensive line. He played in nine of the ten games for Wabash this season, making a season-high six tackles against Wittenberg..
