The Wabash College wrestling team spent Saturday hosting 11 other teams at the 22nd Monon Bell Wrestling Classic. The Little Giants came away with a 3-1 record overall as team, but junior All-American grappler Chris Healy (Jasper, IN/Jasper) (left) went 4-0 at 174 pounds, earning his 102 career victory.
The Little Giants earned a 19-15 win over Carson-Newman College in the first round of the tournament, but lost 34-3 to the eventual second-place team, Millikin University) in round two. Wabash came back with a 45-4 win in the third round, and finished the day with a 22-20 win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Healy went 4-0 at 174 pounds to become the fourth wrestler in Wabash College history to pass the 100 career victories total. The junior won a 9-5 decision over Carson-Newman’s Nathan Sones, then reached the 100-win mark with an 8-1 win against Raul Velazquez from Millikin, scoring Wabash’s only points against the Big Blue. Two more wins, including a pin at 4:24 against Chris Ognslinger of Wisconsin-Parkside, tied him with Carl Maertz ’89 for third on the all-time Wabash victories list. Chris Ervin ’91 (119 wins) and Jason Albaugh ’91 (104 wins) top the list for the Little Giants.
Junior Adam Miller (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) went 3-1 at 157 pounds. He opened the day with a 6-5 win against Isaac Bernard from Carson-Newman, had a forfeit against MacMurray College, then pinned Wisconsin-Platteville’s 1:33 into the final match of the day. Freshman Will Clarke (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) also had a 3-1 record for the weekend at 197 pounds. Clarke scored a 1-0 win in his final match of the tournament after opening with a 10-5 win against Tim Freel and a pin against MacMurray’s Justin Barber in the final two seconds of their match.
Junior Phu Hong (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central), freshman Garrett Pino (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence North), junior Drew McCoy (Cumberland, IN/New Palestine), sophomore Kevin Meyer (Columbus, IN/Columbus), and senior Marcus Ellison (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) were all 2-2 for the day.
