All-Conference Performances Vault Wabash into Third at NCAC Swimming and Diving Championships

Wabash picked up third place finishes in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays on Friday to move into third place overall at the North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday.

The Little Giants opened the finals portion of competition on Friday night with a third-place swim by the 200-yard medley relay team of Matt Perkins (SO/Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg), Colin Fahey (JR/Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard), Kyle Weaver (FR/Portland, IN/Jay County), and Stephen Birrer (SR/Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg). The quartet earned All-Conference honors for their top-three placing after finishing with a time of 1:35.9.

Junior Ben Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) also advanced to the finals, finishing in the eighth place in the evening session with a time of 4:16.35, over a second faster than his morning preliminary time. Little Giant swimmers Michael Hewitt (FR/Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) and Perkins added two more top-eight finishes in the 100 butterfly. Hewitt grabbed fifth place with a time of 52.35, while Perkins was right behind in sixth (52.76). Fahey added another sixth place finish, this time in the 100 breaststroke (59.58).

Howard Bailey (JR/Moss Point, MS/Moss Point) took eighth place on the one-meter diving board, scoring a mark of 213.95.

The final event on Friday became the showcase event for Wabash. The Little Giant team of Brett Findley (SR/Bargersville, IN/Franklin Community), Birrer, Michael Hewitt, and Perkins recorded their best times of their careers in the 800 freestyle relay, finishing in 7:08.12 to boost the Wabash squad into third place overall.

The Little Giants opened the second day of competition at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio in fourth place just nine points out of third. With the results from Friday's competition, Wabash made a 42-point swing, moving into third place with 520 points. Kenyon leads the team scoring with 1,076 points, followed by Denison in second with 1,012. Wittenberg fell to fourth (487), with Wooster (470.50), Allegheny (434.50), Oberlin (348), Hiram (237.50), and Ohio Wesleyan (197.50) rounding out the team scoring.

The three-day meet concludes on Saturday with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay, and men's three-meter diving on the schedule of events.
