Little Giant Grapplers Finish Third at Mid-States Conference Tournament

Individual championships by sophomore Joe Seger (Jasper, IN/Jasper) and junior Chris Healy (Jasper, IN/Jasper) helped the Wabash wrestling team to a third place finish at the Mid-States Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Olivet College in Michigan

Seger took the 184-pound crown with a record of 3-0, including an 8-5 win in the title match over Nate Santelli of Thiel College. Seger opened with a 13-3 win over Manchester's Chris McWhirter, then took a 4-1 victory over Olivet's Ryan Newberry to advance to the championship match.

Healy went 3-0 at 174 pounds to earn the championship title. He opened with pins in his first two matches before taking an 11-2 victory in the championship bout over Manchester's Derrick Whitbeck.

Freshman Will Clarke (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) finished second at 197 pounds. Clarke defeated Mount St. Joseph's Joe Hall 15-7 in the opening match, then took a 6-2 victory over Tom Aigner from Rose-Hulman. Clarke lost a tightly contested 6-4 championship bout to Jeff Wright from Olivet College.

Junior Phu Hong (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) took third place at 125 pounds, winning his final match against Mount St. Joseph's Rob Dearwester with a pin at 3:35. Junior Adam Miller (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) took fourth place at 157 pounds. as did sophomore Kevin Meyer (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) at 165 pounds.

Wabash finished with 116.5 points. Manchester won the team title with 156.5 points, followed by Olivet College in second place with 144. Thiel (92.5), Mount St. Joseph (83), MacMurray (40.5), and Rose-Hulman (11) rounded out the scoring.
