Little Giants Finish Savannah Trip with 1-2 Mark on the Diamond

The Wabash College baseball team broke the seal on the 2004 season over the weekend with a trip to Savannah, Georgia. The Little Giants opened the trip with a 7-6 win over the Savannah College of Art and Design, but lost 4-2 in the night cap against SCAD. On Sunday, the Little Giant tried to rally but could not overcome a 8-0 start by Capital University, falling 9-3 to the Crusaders.

Wabash took a 3-2 lead after three innings in the first game on Saturday against SCAD before breaking the game open with four runs in the sixth to pick up its first win of the season. Sophomore pitcher John Thiry (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian) picked up the win for the Little Giants, while sophomore Taylor Backs (Bedford, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) threw 1-2/3 innings of relief to earn his first save. Juniors Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) and Nick George (West Lafayette, IN/Harrison) both had home runs for Wabash.

Wabash took a 2-1 lead in the second game against Savannah on Saturday, but a three-run fifth tagged Goff with his first loss of the season. Sophomore Chris Sides (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) and freshman Scott Hamilton (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) each had doubles in the loss for the Little Giants.

Sophomore Travis Moore (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) struck out seven batters in four innings against Capital, but suffered his first loss of the season when the Crusaders jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. George blasted his second home run of the weekend in the game, while sophomore catcher Justin VanderIest (Hudsonville, MI/Hudsonville) cracked his first long shot of the year in the loss.

The Little Giants are 1-2 on the season and will travel back to Georgia next weekend for games against LaGrange and Oglethorpe.
