Little Giants Get Sunshine Sweep against Emory & Henry

The Wabash College baseball team continued its spring break action in Florida on Tuesday afternoon, taking both games of a doubleheader against Emory & Henry. The Little Giants came away with a pair of 2-0 victories to even their record at 5-5 for the year.

Pitching was the name of the game for the Little Giants on Tuesday. Junior Jon Horne (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) picked up the win in game one, going seven innings while allowing only five hits. He struckout eight and allowed only three walks. In game two, sophomore Taylor Backs (Bedford, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) threw his first career shutout, going the distance while holding Emory & Henry to six hits and two walks over seven innings. Backs recorded six strikeouts in the contest.

The Little Giants picked up an RBI in game one in the second inning off of a base hit by senior Dan Matusik (Highland, IN/Highland), scoring fellow senior Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) with the game-winning run. Phil Ramos (SO/Zillah, WA/Zillah) scored an insurance run in the third on an RBI single by junior Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration). Matusik was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Wabash offense. Bill Goff (JR/Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) and Nick George (JR/Lafayette, IN/Harrison) each added two hits for the Little Giants.

Wabash scored in the first inning in game two on a triple by George and an RBI base hit by Goff for the only run that Backs would need to secure the win. Freshman Scott Hamilton (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) added the final run of the day in the sixth, scoring on an RBI single by Ramos with one out to secure the win for the Little Giants. Goff and junior Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) each had two hits to pace the Little Giants on offense.

Wabash will be back in action on Thursday against Monmouth College. The first pitch at Jack Russell Stadium is slated for 2:30 p.m.
