Four Little Giant Football Players Earn All-American Honors

Thomas Brown (Granger, IN/Penn) (photo right), Todd Bower (Speedway, IN/Speedway), Kurt Casper (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove), and Ryan Short (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) were named USA Football Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Brown, a senior offensive tackle and co-captain, helped the Little Giant offense to finish 13th in the nation in passing offense with 2,830 yards. He was named Second Team All-Conference this year. He was named the Outstanding Wabash Offensive Lineman this season. A two-year starter, Brown missed his senior season in high school and two years in college rehabilitating from an accident that left him with a broken hip. He was a member of the Wabash offensive line that set a record in 1999 for the fewest sacks allowed in a season in school history (seven).

Casper, a junior wide receiver, finished the season with 82 receptions for 1,005 yards and 12 touchdowns, ranking him sixth in the nation in receptions per game with an 8.2 average. He set the Wabash and NCAC record for receiving yards in a single game with 250 against Allegheny, and set the Wabash record for touchdown receptions in a game with four against Allegheny. Casper tied that mark a week later with four more against Denison. He is currently seventh on the career receiving list for the Little Giants with 1,907 receiving yards. Casper was a First Team All-Conference selection. and was named Co-Outstanding Receiver by the Wabash coaching staff.

Short set the Wabash record for touchdown receptions in a season this year with 13, passing the mark set by Mike Funk ’90 of 12. He made 77 catches for 920 yards, ending the season tied for 10th in Division III in receptions per game with an average of 7.7. He was recognized as the Co-Outstanding Receiver at Wabash, and earned Second Team All-Conference honors.

Bower finished the year ranked in the top 50 in the NCAA among field goal kickers despite missing the final three games of the season to a broken ankle suffered against Hiram College. The junior earned the starting job the third week of the season, kicking a career-long 46-yard field goal against Wittenberg. Bower finished the season 7-of-11 in field goal attempts, hitting three field goals of 40 yards or longer. He was a perfect 20-of-20 in extra point attempts.

Nathan Boulais (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis), Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson), Matt Mercer (Carmel, IN/Carmel), and Short were named to the USA Football Sophomore Honorable Mention All-American Team.

Wabash finished with a 6-4 record in 2000. The Little Giants were third in their first season in the NCAC with a 5-2 mark.
