The Wabash College baseball team saw Olivet College score 11 runs with two outs over a three-inning span on the way to a 14-10 victory over the Little Giants at Mud Hollow Field on Saturday afternoon.
Wabash jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when senior Dan Matusik (Highland, IN/Highland) opened the inning with a double to left. A walk to shortstop Danny Schubert (JR/Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) and a single by Tyler Nance (JR/Celebration, FL/Celebration), the Little Giants plated two runs on a two-run single by sophomore Phil Ramos (Zillah, WA/Zillah).
The Comets erased the lead in the fourth when two hit batsmen came around to score on a two-run single by Olivet. The Comets started their two-scoring explosion in the fifth, picking up three runs after the Little Giants erased the first two batters in the inning. Two doubles by Olivet and two errors by Wabash made it a 5-2 contest in favor of the Comets.
The Little Giants cut the lead to two when Mike Mack (SR/Butler, IN/Eastside) scored on a fielder's choice by Justin VanderIest (SO/Hudsonville, MI/Hudsonville). But with runners at first and second and only one out, Wabash would not get a ball in fair territory, fouling out twice to end the inning.
After scoring two more runs in the seventh gave Olivet a 7-3 lead, the Comets broke the game open by scoring six runs with two outs in the eighth. The Comets blasted two home runs on their way to a five-hit inning and their fourth win of the season.
Wabash rallied for seven runs in the final two innings, only to fall short by four runs in the final tally.
Matusik and Ramos combined for five of the Little Giants' 11 hits. Matusik was 2-for-3, while Ramos finished the game 3-of-6 with four RBIs.
Wabash falls to 8-7 with the loss. The Little Giants and Olivet will conclude the weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader at Mud Hollow Field at noon.
