Wabash Falls in Opening Series against Denison

The Wabash College baseball team took a 2-1 lead in game two of a Friday doubleheader against Denison University, but could not hold on as the Big Red claimed a 4-2 victory. Denison took the first game on Friday 13-0.

Denison opened with a run in the first inning of the second contest, but Wabash rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Senior Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) walked to start the inning, then reached third when Bob Lewis (SO/Highland, IN/Highland) reached on a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by the Big Red, sending Lewis to second. A bunt single by Brandon Heller (FR/Carthage, IN/Rushville) scored Mack to tie the game. The Little Giants took the lead on an RBI single by Scott Hamilton (FR/Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) that scored Lewis.

But the Big Red responded with two runs int he sixth and an insurance run in the seventh to claim the 4-2 win.

Hamilton, Heller, Nick George (JR/West Lafayette, IN/Harrison), Bill Goff (JR/Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg), and Nick Pompeo (FR/Warren, OH/Howland) each had hits in the second game for Wabash. The Little Giant bats were nearly silenced in the first game. A single by George in the sixth inning broke up a no-hit bid by Drew Shamrock.

Wabash (11-17, 2-7 NCAC West) will play the final two games of the series against Denison on Saturday afternoon. The first pitch is set for noon.
