CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN — This Saturday, April 13th the Student Senate, IFC, and IMA are co-sponsoring Wabash's First Annual Community Service Day. Each living unit will go out into the county, push up their sleeves, and get to work on a wide range of projects.
"This gives the students of Wabash College a chance to give back to the community. Furthermore, we learn a valuable lesson about giving of ourselves," said Kip Chase student senate vice-president.
Already this year, Wabash students have engaged in more than 3,000 hours of local community service. Students set an all-time record during the residential phase of the MUFFY fund raising drive, generating more than $5,000 for the local united fund. Additionally, Wabash students donated more than $2,000 to the Family Crisis Shelter and Julian Center, a pair of central Indiana abuse shelters, and donated more than $1,000 to 9/11 relief agencies.
Most recently, Wabash students donated $,1000 in cash, plus another $1,000 in supplies to the DePauw University Rector Hall Fire Relief Fund.
"Wabash should be very proud of the way it has responded to our crisis," said Ken Owen, director of media services at DePauw. "We're good rivals in sports, but a tragedy like this transcends that rivalry."
This weekend, when Wabash men are dispatched throughout Montgomery County to work on projects, the only money at stake will be a grand prize for the living unit with the highest percentage of participants involved. The Student Senate will award that living unit $500 to donate to the charity of their choice.
The event will start at noon on the Wabash mall and will conclude at about 3:00. there will a cookout at 5:00 o'clock for those who have participated.
