Tankers Fall in Dual Meet Against Kalamazoo

The Wabash swimming and diving team faced one of the top teams in the nation on Saturday as Kalamazoo took a 166-77 victory at the Class of 1950 Natatorium.

The Little Giants took the first race from the fourth-ranked Kalamazoo team as R.J. Morgan (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) (photo), Craig Haupert (Cedar Lake, IN/Lowell), Brandon Peacock (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville), and Ben Long (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) took first place in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:37.55. It would mark the last time that Wabash had a lead in the meet, as Kalamazoo swept the 1000-meter freestyle race.

Morgan took first place in the 200 backstroke (1:58.72), and second in the 50 free (22.24), as did Dean Fox (Aurora, IN/South Dearborn) in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.84.

Nick Roersma (Grand Rapids, MI/Northview) provided another bright spot for Wabash on the afternoon. Roersma took second place in the one-meter diving event, less than four points out of first place. He aslo took second place in three-meter diving.

"I hoped that we would respond to last weekend's loss to Washington University by swimming well this week against a very competative Kalamazoo team," said coach Gail Pebworth. "We had some good times, but needed to swim better as a team to compete against Kalamazoo."

The Little Giants will participate in the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship meet in Canton, OH. The meet runs from Feb. 8-10.
