Big Innings Lead To Sweep Over Wabash by DePauw

The Wabash College baseball team saw the DePauw Tigers score eight runs in the second inning of game one and six runs in the second inning of game two on Saturday afternoon on the way to a sweep of both the two games and the three-game weekend series. The Tigers took game one 16-6 before shutting out the Little Giants 11-0 in game two.

The lone highlight of the day came from senior Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside), who belted his team-leading ninth home run of the season over the left centerfield fence in the third inning of the first contest. Mack needs three more home runs to break the single season record of 11 set by Matt Wilhelm '00 in 2000. Mack is also three away from breaking Wilhelm's career record of 23 homers.

Wabash's only scoring on Saturday came in that third inning after DePauw had taken an 8-0 lead. Freshman Nick Pompeo (Warren, OH/Howland) led off the third with a single and came around to score the Little Giants' first run of the game on a wild pitch two batters later. Bill Goff (JR/Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) added two more runs to the Wabash portion of the scoreboard with a double off the right centerfield wall, followed by an RBI single by Chris Sides (SO/Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg). That set up the two-run homer by Mack to cut the Tigers' lead to two.

But DePauw answered with a run in the bottom of the third and three in the fourth to take a 12-6 lead. DePauw added four more in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory.

Game two saw the Tigers jump out to a 7-0 lead after scoring one in the first and six in the second. DePauw never looked back, picking up its 25th victory of the season and its 11th in a row over the Little Giants.

Hamilton, Goff, and Sides each had three hits in the two games for Wabash. Goff and Mack led the Little Giants in RBIs with two a piece.

Wabash (12-22) will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana on Tuesday, April 20 for a 7 p.m. contest against Rose-Hulman.
