Sides Paces Wabash to Sweep Over Earlham in Marathon Baseball Weekend

Wabash College sophomore Chris Sides (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) went 7-for-10 on Sunday afternoon and evening to help the Little Giants to two wins over Earlham College in North Coast Athletic Conference Western Division baseball. Wabash claimed a 9-6 victory in game one on Sunday, then took a 12-10 victory in 11 innings in game two.

The two teams spent almost 6-1/2 hours on the diamond on Sunday after having already played 13 innings in one of two games on Saturday.

Sides blasted two home runs and a double in game one, picking up four RBIs while scoring three runs. Senior Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) picked up his tenth home run of the season in the sixth inning, putting him two away from tying the school record for single season and career homers.

Junior Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) worked 5-1/3 innings on the mound to earn his fourth win of the season.

Game two was a four-hour battle between the two Indiana rivals. After both teams scored 10 runs in the first five innings, the pitchers settled into a groove, keeping zeroes on the scoreboard until the 11th. Nick Pompeo (FR/Warren, OH/Howland) singled home Tyler Nance (JR/Celebration, FL/Celebration) with the winning run in the final inning, then Sides added an insurance run with an RBI single to score Brandon Heller (FR/Carthage, IN/Rushville).

Sides finished game two with four hits in six at bats, scoring three runs and picking up three RBIs. Goff added his fourth home run of the season in the fourth. Phil Ramos (SO/Zillah, WA/Zillah) hit his first homer of the season with a two-run shot in the fifth.

Sophomore Travis Moore (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) came on to finish the game in the 11th for starter John Thiry (SO/Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian). Thiry worked 10 innings, allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out five to pick up his third win of the season. Moore notched his first save this year after striking out one batter in one inning of work.

The two wins gave Wabash a sweep of the four-game series against the Quakers. The Little Giants finished the year with a record of 6-10 in NCAC Western Division games.

Wabash (16-23) will conclude the season on Tuesday evening against the Franklin College Grizzlies. The game will be played at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Indiana. Game time is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are $4 and will be available at the gate.
