DEEP Liberal Arts Colloquium

This is a gathering of representatives from the 12 Baccalaureate-granting institutions that participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)'s Project DEEP (Documenting Effective Educational Practices). Our work will be organized around learning from each other. We will discuss some of the findings of Project DEEP, particularly as these are relevant for liberal arts education, and we will work with colleagues from a variety of schools to improve liberal arts education on our campuses.

Final Summary

For two days the Center of Inquiry hosted representatives from the 12 liberal arts colleges that participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)'s Project DEEP (Documenting Effective Educational Practices). NSSE DEEP institutions were selected for two characteristics: better than expected student retention and strong performance on NSSE. George Kuh, Jillian Kinzie, and Sara Hinkle began the meeting with a summary of key attitudes and practices that appear to foster effective education at DEEP institutions. These include an unshakeable focus on student learning, positive restlessness on campuses that are always looking to do better, and shared responsibility for educational quality and student success. Most of our time together was devoted to discussions about practices on our campuses. Each school highlighted a success on their campus, as well as challenges for which they could learn from others' experiences. These opportunities to form connections with colleagues from other campuses, and to learn from their perspectives, are perhaps the most important initial accomplishments of the gathering.
