The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement: Its Application for Liberal Education

Abstract

The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) is a companion survey to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).  Easy to administer (via the web) and relatively inexpensive (as low as $1,000 per institution), FSSE relies on faculty perceptions of students’ experiences and collects data on students in groups. If used alone, this results in only modest detail.  When FSSE is used in conjunction with NSSE, which gathers related individual student data, the combination provides an in-depth view of the student and faculty perceptions.  FSSE collects data that, in concert with NSSE, provides a foundation to facilitate conversations about improving some core liberal arts experiences for students, such as basic higher order thinking and student involvement.
