Dutchmen Fly Past Little Giants

By Andrew McGlothlen

Holland, MI--With a big crowd and beautiful weather, Wabash College Soccer was served its third loss of the season Friday by the Hope College Flying Dutchman, falling by a final score of 5-1.

The first half was a very competitive game of soccer. Thirty-two minutes into play, the Dutchmen launched their first goal into the net from the left by Tyler Basler. Wabash fought hard for the rest of the half to keep the game to 0-1.

After the half, however, the Dutchmen peppered Will McAdams (JR/Carmel, IN/Carmel) in goal with repeated shot attempts. Shortly into the second half, Hope's Bryan Johnson hit a corner kick in to Bryan Mulder, who knocked the ball in for Hope's second goal.

Seven minutes later, Wabash finally answered the Dutchmen's challenge with a swift slide from Gary Simkus (FR/Highland, IN/Highland), knocking the ball over the keep. Simkus got the ball from Morgan Patchell (SR/Grand Rapids, MI/Loy Norrix) and Colin Smith (SR/Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) in a quick play in front of the goal.

This would, however, be Wabash's only one of the match while the Dutchmen went on to tally three more goals at the 55th, 56th, and 68th minutes. The first of these goals was a one-on-one with McAdams in which the shooter, Bain Rumohr, knocked the ball over the diving goaltender. The second of these, a minute later, came from Karter Klingenburg from a rebound of another shot that hit the crossbar. The final goal, in the 68th minute, came as Devin McNeil intercepted an attempted clear by Wabash and slammed the ball from the upper right box into the upper left corner of the goal.

Overall for the game, the Flying Dutchmen outshot the Little Giants 26-10. The Little Giants play again on Saturday in Michigan at Calvin College.
