The Wabash College Lecture Committee invite you to hear acclaimed author and speaker, Craig Unger, tonight at 8 p.m. in Salter Hall in the Fine Arts Center.
Craig Unger is author of the New York Times bestseller, House of Bush, House of Saud: The Secret Relationship Between the World's Two Most Powerful Dynasties. Unger and his work are featured prominently in Michael Moore’s documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11.
Unger tells how the royal House of Saud, the richest family in the world, began prospecting among rising American politicians in the seventies. With the Bushes, the Saudis hit a gusher and won access to both George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush—not to mention Secretary of State James Baker, Vice-President Dick Cheney, and the entire U.S. intelligence apparatus. What followed was an amazing weave of influence, strategic investment, socializing, and secret policy between the House of Bush and the House of Saud that arcs from the 1980s into today’s headlines. By the time George W. Bush was elected, the House of Saud had transferred more than $1.4 billion to companies tied to the House of Bush. But the importance of the relationship goes far beyond money. Unger argues that the secret liaison between these two great families helped trigger the Age of Terror and give rise to the tragedy of 9/11. Following his talk, there will be an opportunity to have the author sign his book and engage in conversation.
In conjunction with the visit of Craig Unger on October 11, the Lecture Committee is pleased to show the film Fahrenheit 9/11 on Sunday, October 10 at 7 p.m. in Salter Hall in the Fine Arts Center. Unger and his work are featured prominently in the film. Claudia Puig of USA TODAY writes "The documentary’s scathing attack on the war in Iraq and George W. Bush’s presidency is informative, provocative, frightening, compelling, funny, manipulative and, most of all, entertaining." A discussion will follow the film.
