Little Giants Dominate in Pool over IWU

Wabash took first place finishes in four of the first five events Friday night on the way to a 140-85 win over Illinois Wesleyan University in the Class of 1950 Natatorium.

The quartet of Matt Perkins (JR/Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg), Ben Hewitt (SR/Greenwood, IN/Center Grove), Kyle Weaver (SO/Portland, IN/Jay County), and Michael Belanger (FR/Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) outdistanced the rest of the field by over three seconds to take the top spot in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.27. Brad Williams (SR/Columbus, IN/Columbus North) followed with a first place swim in the 1000 freestyle, touching in 10:52.62. Teammate Chris Bly (JR/Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence North) took second in the event with a time of 11:33.72.

Weaver added another nine points to the Little Giants' team total with a first place finish in the 50 free (22.42). Perkins was second (22.53), and Filip Drambarean (FR/Attica, IN/Attica) took fifth (25.80).

Hewitt took first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 2:09.03. Perkins and Colin Fahey (SR/Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard), and Weaver went 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle. Perkins touched first in 49.37, followed by Fahey with a 50.09. Weaver made it a sweep of the top-three spots with a time of 51.61.

Freshman Chad Damitz (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) was first in the 100 backstroke (56.19), with Williams adding a second place finish (58.93). Wabash finished the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free. Belanger won the event (5:06.17), followed by Michael Hewitt (SO/Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) in second (5:37.22), and Bly in third (5:43.57).

Wabash returns to the water Saturday with a 1 p.m. meet at Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute.
