Grapplers Open Season With Win at Elmhurst

The Wabash College wrestling team opened the 2004-05 season with a 21-16 win Friday over 21st-ranked Elmhurst College.

The Little Giants opened with a pin by senior Phu Hong (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) in the 125-pound match over Mike Reese at the 5:30 mark of the match. Drew McCoy (SR/Greenfield, IN/New Palestine) fought to a 3-1 decision at 149 pounds, while Kevin Meyer (SR/Columbus, IN/Columbus North) also took a close 3-2 decision at 165 pounds.

Senior All-American Chris Healy (Jasper, IN/Jasper) moved one victory closer to the all-time wins record at Wabash, pinning the Blue Jays' Nick Mason 2:15 into the 174-pound match. Healy is three wins away from passing Wabash Athletics Hall of Famer Chris Ervin '91, who recorded 119 wins in his four-year career.

The final win of the night came from freshman Garrett Thiel (Lowell, IN/Lowell) with a 5-3 win at heavyweight.

Elmhurst came into the meet ranked 21st in the Brute-Adidas/National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll.

The Little Giants will participate in the Olivet Duals this weekend.
